Setting User Permissions
Configure access levels and feature toggles for each WordPress user role in Protuno.
Configuring a role means expanding its row in the Role Manager, setting the access level (Full, Content, or None), and choosing which specific features are available to users with that role. Changes take effect immediately — no cache flush needed.
Opening the Role Manager
Go to Protuno → Role Manager in your WordPress dashboard.
You will see a list of every WordPress user role on your site. Each role shows its current access status as a badge on the right, a green Full access badge or a grey No access badge.
Expanding a role
Click the arrow (↓) on the right side of any role row to expand it. The row opens to show two sections: Access Level and the feature toggles.
Click the arrow again to collapse the row.
Access Level
Every role has three access level options displayed as buttons:
No access
The user cannot open or interact with the Protuno editor at all. The editor UI is completely hidden from them, they will not see any Protuno controls, menus, or edit options on the front end or inside Elementor.
Use this for roles that have no reason to build or edit pages, such as Subscribers, Customers, or any front-end-only user.
Content only
The user can open existing Proton widgets and edit their content, text, images, and other values, but they cannot:
- Add new Proton widgets
- Delete existing Proton widgets
- Regenerate output using AI prompts
- Change layout or structure
This is the safest option for clients or junior contributors who need to update content but should not be able to change the design or structure of a page.
Full access
"Full editor, subject to the feature toggles below."
The user has complete access to the Protuno editor, they can add and remove Proton widgets, write AI prompts, regenerate sections, and control layout. However, three specific advanced features are still individually controlled by the feature toggles below.
Use this for trusted editors, designers, and site managers who need to do real page building work.
Feature toggles
These three toggles appear when a role is set to Full access. They let you grant or restrict specific advanced capabilities even within full access.
Theme Builder
Create & edit header/footer/404 templates.
When on, the user can access Protuno → Theme Builder to create, edit, and delete site-wide templates, headers, footers, archive layouts, single post templates, and more.
Turn on for: Senior editors or designers who manage global site structure.
Keep off for: Content writers and page editors who should only work on individual pages and should not be able to change what appears across the whole site.
Default: Off
Design System
Edit global CSS, variables and classes.
When on, the user can edit global CSS variables, custom classes, and site-wide style settings inside the Protuno editor. Changes here affect every page on the site that uses those variables or classes.
Turn on for: Developers and designers responsible for the site's global visual style.
Keep off for: Anyone who should only edit content and layout on individual pages, changes to the Design System can unintentionally break the look of the entire site.
Default: Off
AI Chat
Use the built-in AI assistant in the composer.
When on, the user can open the built-in AI chat assistant inside the Protuno composer. The AI assistant helps users write prompts, refine sections, and generate content directly from a chat interface.
Turn on for: Editors and builders you trust to use AI-assisted tools for page building.
Keep off for: Roles where you want to control or limit AI usage, or where the AI chat would create confusion for less technical users.
Default: Off
Common configurations
Content writer
A user who only updates text and images on existing pages.

A trusted editor who builds pages and manages templates but should not touch global CSS.

A designer who builds individual pages with AI but does not manage global templates or styles.

Saving changes
After adjusting any role's access level or feature toggles, click Save Changes at the bottom right of the page.
Changes apply immediately, users with that role do not need to log out and back in. On their next page load, the updated permissions take effect.
Administrators always have full access to all Protuno features regardless of Role Manager settings. The Administrator role does not appear in the Role Manager list and cannot be restricted.
